SYMPOSIUM

Update on Emerging Infections: 12 Different Countries, 26 Speaker

KUISCID hosted the international meeting of “Update on current emerging infections” with researchers attending worldwide.  Participants who have high-impact research on emerging infections shared their recent findings and brainstormed future improvements for the struggle against these infections. Prof. Eskild Peterson, chairman of EITaF (ESCMID Emerging Infections Task Force), summarized the current literature studies. In the opening session, KUISCID Director Prof. Önder Ergönül pointed out the significance of organizing such an international meeting for actions to be taken, regarding the current and future emerging infections.

A Pioneer Center in Its Field: KUISCID

In the international meeting, KUISCID researchers gave speeches on their recent findings. KUISCID Director Prof. Önder Ergönül, Vice Director Prof. Füsun Can, Head of Public Health Department Prof. Sibel Sakarya, Assoc. Prof. Şiran Keske, Dr. Mahir Kapmaz and post-doctoral researcher Cansel Vatansever presented their research on COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), monkeypox, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever as well as the rapid and continuous spread of antibiotic resistance in bacterial infections.

Scientists Met in İstanbul

The meeting hosted 30 universities worldwide with almost 120 participants and future collaborations were discussed in detail in the meeting. The importance of joint works between universities and industry as well as the well-preparedness for pandemics similar to COVID-19 were some of the bullet points of the sessions. Under these circumstances, the critical role of research centers such as KUISCID were once more pointed out in terms of the scientific contributions and strategies developed.

Science City Istanbul

The international meeting was organized with the support of İstanbul Municipality (İBB). Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu attended the reception and shared his expressions on emerging infections. The main emphases of his thoughts were: “We have to be well prepared for the emerging infections and this is only possible if we transparently share our knowledge and experiences. Our coordination is critical for developing new strategies in the name of the infection struggle which is a worldwide concern. I believe, with active coordination and guidance of science, we will build a solid future together.”

We Will Attend ECCMID With 20 Different Projects

The international congress of ECCMID organized European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) will take place in Denmark on 15-18th April 2023. KUISCID is very happy to be joining the conference with 20 different projects. Out of these 20 projects, 5 oral presentations will be given by post-doctoral researchers Nazlı Ataç, Gülen Esken, Cansel Vatansever, and Ph.D. student Gülin Özcan. Additionally, 15 poster presentations will be given by Ph.D. students Fatihan Pınarlık, Jale Boral, Zeynep Ece Kuloğlu and Master students Güz Ekinci, Kübra Çam and Francis K. Cooper.

Research Project of Medical Students Was Accepted As Oral Presentation in ECCMID

KUISCID supports 2nd and 3rd year medical students for research and trains them in terms of data analysis, presentation skills and research methodologies. Our students Zeynep Bengi Eren, Bedirhan Haykar and Berk Kabadayı will have an oral presentation on their research “Presence of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A viruses in indoor air in the tertiary university hospital during Omicron wave and normalization period” in European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID). We congratulate our students.
